**Short answer:** WhatsApp never tells you when someone deletes your number, and there is no button to check. You only get clues: their profile photo, About or last seen may disappear (if their privacy is set to "My contacts"), you stop seeing their status, and broadcast list messages stop reaching them, because broadcasts only arrive for people who saved your number. Each clue has other possible causes, so treat it as a "maybe", never as proof.

## Why WhatsApp doesn't tell you

Your number lives in their phone's contacts, not in WhatsApp. WhatsApp only reads that list to decide who counts as a contact. When someone deletes a number, nothing is sent to anyone.

What you can see are the **side effects**. Some WhatsApp features only work between contacts, so when you stop being one, those features stop working for you. Here are the clues, from weakest to strongest, and how each one can fool you.

## Clue 1: their photo, About or last seen disappears

On WhatsApp, people choose who sees their profile photo, About and last seen:

- Everyone
- My contacts
- My contacts except...
- Nobody

If they picked **My contacts** and then deleted your number, you are not a contact anymore. So their photo turns into the grey avatar, the About text goes blank and "last seen" disappears.

**How this can fool you:**

- If their settings are on **Everyone**, nothing changes at all, even if they deleted you.
- They may have removed their photo, or switched everything to **Nobody**.
- They may have hidden things from you only, with "My contacts except...", without deleting you.
- If you hid your own last seen, you can't see theirs either. Read [why last seen disappears](https://thecringe.app/blog/whatsapp-last-seen) for all the reasons.
- On newer iPhones, people can give WhatsApp access to only some of their contacts. If you are not in that list, WhatsApp treats you like a stranger even though your number is in their phone.
- A new phone where contacts didn't sync yet does the same thing.

## Clue 2: you stop seeing their status

Status updates are only shared with people the poster has saved. So if you watched their status every week and now you never see it, they may have deleted your number.

This is also the best answer to the opposite question. **If you can see their status, they have your number saved.** Status can't be shared with people who are not in their contacts.

**How this can fool you:**

- They stopped posting, or post less.
- They hid their status from you with "My contacts except..." or "Only share with...".
- You deleted *their* number. Make sure they are still saved on your phone.
- You muted their updates by mistake. Check the muted section at the bottom of the Updates tab.

## Clue 3: the broadcast list trick

This is the strongest clue you can test yourself. A broadcast list sends the same message to several people, and each person gets it as a normal private message. The key rule: **a broadcast message only arrives if that person has your number saved.** Nobody sees an error. The message just never reaches them.

**How to do it:**

1. Make sure their number is saved on your phone. You can only add contacts to a list.
2. Create a broadcast list. On Android, open the Chats tab, tap the three dots, then **New broadcast**. On iPhone, open Chats and look for **Broadcast lists** at the top of the screen (in some versions it sits in a menu), then tap **New list**.
3. Add them and one friend you know has your number. You need at least two people, and the friend works as your control.
4. Send a normal message that makes sense for both, like "Happy Friday! Any fun plans for the weekend?" It shows up in each person's normal chat with you, and they can't tell it was a broadcast.
5. Wait a few hours. Then press and hold your message in the broadcast chat and tap **Info** to see who it was delivered to.

**How to read the result:**

- **Both got it:** they have your number saved.
- **Your friend got it, they didn't, and your normal messages to them still get two ticks:** they probably don't have your number saved.
- **Nobody got it:** something else is wrong. Try again later.

**How this can fool you:**

- Their phone was off or offline. Wait longer and check your normal chat ticks too.
- It shows that they don't have you saved *now*. It can't tell you if they deleted you or never saved you in the first place.
- WhatsApp has tested monthly limits on broadcast messages, so you may hit a limit if you use broadcasts a lot.
- It sends a real message. Never send "test" or something strange, because it lands in their chat like any other text.

## Clue 4: "Sorry, who is this?"

The most honest clue is the simplest one. If you text them and they answer "who's this?", they don't have your number saved anymore. Without a saved contact, WhatsApp shows them your number and your profile name instead of the name they used to have for you.

It can also mean a new phone with lost contacts, so don't take it personally right away.

## Deleted number vs blocked vs privacy settings

| What you see | They deleted your number | They blocked you | They changed privacy settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile photo | Gone, if set to "My contacts" | Gone | Gone, if hidden from you |
| Last seen and online | Gone, if set to "My contacts" | Gone | Gone, if hidden |
| Your messages | Two ticks as normal | One tick, forever | Two ticks as normal |
| Calls | Ring as normal | Never connect | Ring as normal |
| Broadcast messages | Don't arrive | Don't arrive | Arrive |
| Their status | You stop seeing it | You stop seeing it | Hidden, if you are excluded |

The fastest way to tell them apart is the ticks. **If your messages get two ticks, you are not blocked.** If they stay on one tick for days and calls fail, read our guide on [how to know if someone blocked you](https://thecringe.app/blog/blocked-on-whatsapp). And if you're worried they silenced you without deleting anything, that's a different question: here is [how to tell if you're muted or archived](https://thecringe.app/blog/muted-or-archived-on-whatsapp).

## What it means if they deleted your number

People delete numbers for many reasons, and most are boring:

- **Phone cleanup.** They removed old work, school or one-time contacts.
- **New phone.** Contacts didn't move over, so it was never a choice.
- **Distance after a breakup or a fight.** Deleting a number is a common way to stop seeing someone's status and photo while moving on.
- **They want space.** They don't want to see your updates, but they don't want the drama of blocking either.

If they still reply to you normally, it doesn't matter much. A saved name is not the relationship.

If it happened right after things went quiet between you, and your messages now go unanswered, it looks more like [ghosting](https://thecringe.app/blog/ghosting). In that case, the number is not the real problem. The silence is.

## What to do about it

- **If you're on good terms,** just say who you are: "Hey, it's Maya from the climbing gym, in case you got a new phone 🙂". Easy and not awkward.
- **If you want to ask,** keep it light: "Random question, did you lose my number? Your photo disappeared on my side." If they say they got a new phone, believe them.
- **If it was after a breakup,** let it be. Texting from another number or asking friends to check feels like pressure, and it usually makes things worse.
- **Stop checking.** Opening their profile ten times a day to see if the photo came back only feeds your anxiety.

## What your chat can show you

A missing profile photo is one tiny signal. Your chat history is much bigger. If you want to know how this person really felt about talking to you, look at who started most conversations, how fast each of you replied on average and how many messages each person sent.

The Cringe shows these numbers for both of you from your exported WhatsApp chat. With Premium, the AI report adds an interest level for each person and a final verdict, so you can see how invested each of you really was.

## FAQ

### Can you tell if someone deleted your number on WhatsApp?

Not for sure. You only get clues, like a missing photo or status, or broadcast messages that don't reach them. Each clue can also come from privacy settings or a new phone.

### If someone deletes my number, can they still see my profile picture?

It depends on your settings, not theirs. If your photo is set to "Everyone", yes. If it's set to "My contacts" and you still have their number saved, they can still see it too.

### If someone deletes my number, can they still message me on WhatsApp?

Yes. Deleting a number is not blocking. The chat stays on both phones, and they can still text and call you. They just see your number instead of a saved name.

### How do I know if someone saved my number on WhatsApp?

If you can see their status updates, or a broadcast message reaches them, they have your number saved. Seeing their photo when it's set to "My contacts" means the same.

### Does the broadcast list trick still work in 2026?

Yes. Broadcast messages still only reach people who saved your number. It's a strong hint, not proof, because a phone that is off gives the same result for a while.
