**Short answer:** there is no reliable way to know. WhatsApp doesn't notify anyone when their chat or status is muted or archived, and nothing changes on your side: your messages are still delivered, the ticks still turn blue when they read them (if read receipts are on), and you still see their photo and last seen as before. Slower replies can be a clue, but they have many other causes. If you really want to know, the only honest way is to ask.

Mute and archive are private tools. WhatsApp built them for the person using them, not for the people in their chat list. So most "signs" you read online are guesses.

## What mute, archive and block look like from your side

| | Muted | Archived | Blocked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Are you notified? | No | No | No |
| Your message ticks | Two grey, then blue when read | Two grey, then blue when read | One grey tick only |
| Their profile photo | Same as before | Same as before | Usually gone |
| Their last seen and online | Same as before | Same as before | Hidden |
| Your calls | Ring normally | Ring normally | Never connect |
| Can you tell? | No | No | Probably, from several signs together |

Blue ticks depend on read receipts. If either of you has them turned off, you'll only ever see grey ticks in your 1-on-1 chat.

The key line: **if your messages get two ticks, you are not blocked.** Muted or archived, maybe. Blocked, no.

## What happens when you mute someone on WhatsApp

To mute a chat, people open the chat, tap the contact's name and tap Mute. On Android they can also press and hold the chat in the list and tap the mute icon. WhatsApp then asks how long: **8 hours, 1 week or Always**.

What changes **for them**:

- No sound, vibration or banner when you send a message.
- A small muted icon appears next to your chat in their list.
- Your messages still arrive, and they can open them any time.
- Calls still ring. Muting a chat only silences messages.

What changes **for you**:

- Nothing. Your messages are delivered (two grey ticks). When they open the chat, the ticks turn blue, if both of you have read receipts on.
- You still see their last seen, online status and profile photo, if they share them with you.

People mute for all kinds of reasons: they're at work, they're trying to sleep, the chat is full of memes and voice notes, or they just need a break from their phone. Plenty of people mute their partner during work hours and their family group forever.

## What happens when you archive a chat on WhatsApp

Archiving moves a chat out of the main Chats list into a separate **Archived** folder. It doesn't delete the chat and it doesn't block anyone. On iPhone, people swipe left on a chat and tap Archive. On Android, they press and hold the chat and tap the archive icon.

What happens to new messages depends on one setting, **Keep chats archived**, in Settings > Chats:

- **If it's on (the default):** the chat stays in Archived when you send a new message, and they don't get a notification for it. They only see your message when they open the Archived folder.
- **If it's off:** your new message brings the chat back to their main list, like any normal chat.

So if someone archived your chat with that setting on, your message can sit unopened for a long time. Not because they're ignoring it, but because they really haven't seen it. From your side, that looks like two grey ticks for hours or even days.

## How to know if someone muted your status

When someone mutes your status updates, your posts move to a "Muted updates" section at the bottom of their Updates tab. They don't get a notice, and neither do you. They can still open your status any time.

The only clue people use is the viewers list on your status. If someone used to watch every update and now never appears, they might have muted you. But it can also mean:

- They turned off read receipts. Then their views don't show up, and they can't see who viewed their own status either.
- They're busy and not opening status at all.
- Your own status privacy no longer includes them (check your settings).

So a missing name in your viewers list proves very little.

Don't mix this up with them hiding **their** status from you. People can choose who sees their status, and if they leave you out, you just stop seeing their updates. That's different from muting, and you can't confirm it either.

## Weak clues (and why they prove little)

- **Slower replies.** Could be mute. Could also be work, stress, a new routine or less interest.
- **Two grey ticks for a long time while they show online.** Could be an archive with "Keep chats archived" on. Could also be that they're busy in other chats, or they read your message in the notification without opening the chat.
- **They stopped viewing your status.** Could be a status mute. Could also be read receipts off, or just no time.
- **They answer calls but not texts.** Could be mute. Could also be someone who simply prefers calls.

None of these is proof. If you want to read slow replies properly, look at the pattern over weeks. Here's [what reply times really mean](https://thecringe.app/blog/reply-time-meaning).

## Muted or archived vs blocked

Being muted or archived is quiet and private. Being blocked is a bigger step, and it does leave signs. If you're blocked, your messages stay on **one grey tick**, you can't see their profile photo, last seen or online, and calls never connect. Here's the full guide on [how to know if someone blocked you](https://thecringe.app/blog/blocked-on-whatsapp), and on [what one tick means](https://thecringe.app/blog/whatsapp-one-tick).

Keep in mind that privacy settings can also hide a last seen or a photo, so a missing last seen alone means nothing. Here's [why last seen disappears](https://thecringe.app/blog/whatsapp-last-seen). Always check the ticks first. Two ticks means you're not blocked.

## What it means if they did mute or archive you

Most of the time, mute is about **noise, not you**. People mute busy chats, mute everyone during exams, or mute their best friend because she sends 40 voice notes a day. Archive is often just tidying. Some people archive every chat they've already read.

It only says something about you if it comes with other changes: shorter replies, no questions, no plans, a colder tone. Then the mute is a small part of a bigger story, and the bigger story is what matters.

And if they did it to take space after a fight, that's not the worst thing. Taking space is better than saying something hurtful.

## What to do

- **Don't ask "did you mute me?"** It sounds like an accusation, and they might feel watched.
- **Say what you need instead:** "Hey, I feel like my messages get lost lately. Is a lot of texting too much right now? Happy to call instead."
- **With a friend:** "No pressure to reply fast, I know you're swamped. Just checking you're ok 🙂"
- **If it's urgent, call.** Calls still ring even when a chat is muted.
- **If it's someone you're dating and the effort dropped:** talk about the effort, not the mute button.

## What your chat can show

You can't see someone's mute or archive settings, and The Cringe can't either. What you can see is how your conversation really changed. The Cringe analyzes your exported WhatsApp chat and shows each person's average reply time, who texts first and message counts. If their replies went from minutes to hours after a certain point, that's a clearer clue than any guess about a mute button.

## FAQ

### Does WhatsApp tell you if someone muted you?

No. WhatsApp never sends a notification when someone mutes your chat or your status, and nothing changes on your side.

### If someone archived my chat, will they still get my messages?

Yes. Your messages are delivered normally. If they have "Keep chats archived" on, the chat stays in their Archived folder without a notification, so they may only see it later.

### Can you see if someone muted your status on WhatsApp?

No. A muted status just moves to the bottom of their Updates tab. If they stop showing in your viewers list, it could be a mute, read receipts turned off, or just no time.

### Do blue ticks still show if someone muted me?

Yes. Muting only silences notifications. When they open your chat, the ticks turn blue, as long as both of you have read receipts on.

### What is the difference between mute and block on WhatsApp?

Mute only silences notifications, and your messages arrive normally with two ticks. Block stops your messages and calls from reaching them, so your messages stay on one tick.
