**Short answer:** A dry texter sends short replies, rarely asks questions and leaves the other person to keep the chat going. Paste some messages into our dry texter test and you get a dryness score from 0 to 100, based on message length, one-word replies, questions, emoji and laughs. If you have no messages to paste, take the 10-question quiz about your texting habits instead.

## Two ways to take the dry texter test

### 1. Paste your messages

Copy some recent messages and paste them into the box. Paste your own texts to check yourself, or their texts if you want to know if they're a dry texter. The more messages you paste, the fairer the score.

The test looks at five things:

- **Words per message.** "Haha yes I saw that, it was so bad" says a lot more than "ya".
- **One-word replies.** "ok", "k", "lol", "nice", "true". A few are normal. A whole chat of them is dry.
- **Questions.** Questions keep a conversation alive. No questions means the other person does all the work.
- **Emoji.** They add tone. "ok" can feel cold, while "ok 😊" feels friendly.
- **Laughs.** "haha", "lmao" and 😂 show you're enjoying the chat.

Then it gives you a dryness score from 0 to 100. The higher the score, the drier the texts.

### 2. Take the quiz

The quiz has 10 quick questions about your own habits: how you answer "how was your day?", if you ask questions back, how often you start conversations and what you do when a chat slows down. You get a dry texting score and a result from "Not dry at all" to "Desert dry".

## What your dryness score means

- **Close to 0:** your texts are warm and easy to answer. You ask questions, react and share things.
- **Around the middle:** you reply, but you often leave the other person to carry the conversation. One small change makes a big difference.
- **Close to 100:** short replies, few questions, little emotion. The chat probably dies often, and the other person may think you're not interested, even if you are.

A high score is not a personality test. Plenty of people text dry and talk warmly in person. The score only shows how your texts read on a screen, where nobody can see your face or hear your voice.

## Dry texter or not interested?

This is the big question when someone else texts dry. A dry texter is dry with everyone. Someone who isn't interested is dry mostly with you. Our guide on the [dry texter meaning](https://thecringe.app/blog/dry-texter-meaning) goes deeper, but here's the quick version:

| Probably just a dry texter | Probably not interested |
|---|---|
| Short replies, but always replies | Replies get slower and slower |
| Texts first sometimes | Never starts a conversation |
| Says yes to plans and shows up | Avoids plans or cancels |
| Much warmer on calls or in person | Just as flat in person |
| Has always texted this way | Was chatty before, dry now |

If most of what you see is in the right column, it may not be about texting style at all. Our post on [losing interest over text](https://thecringe.app/blog/losing-interest-over-text) explains the signs.

## How to stop dry texting

Good texting isn't about long messages. It's about giving the other person something to answer. Try these:

- **Answer, add, ask.** "Good" becomes "Good! Finally finished that project. How was yours?"
- **React to details.** If they tell you about an exam, ask how it went the next day.
- **Text first sometimes.** Send a meme, a song or "this made me think of you".
- **Use emoji for tone.** One emoji can make a short reply feel warm instead of cold.
- **Send a voice note** when typing feels like work.

## See it in your real chat

The test checks a handful of messages. Your WhatsApp chat shows the whole picture. The Cringe shows how many messages each person sends, each person's average reply time, who texts first, the longest message and your top words. The AI report adds an interest level for each person, which helps a lot when you can't tell if they're dry or just not that into it.

## FAQ

### What counts as dry texting?

Short replies, one-word answers like "ok" or "lol", no questions and no emoji. One dry message is normal. Dry texting is when it's the pattern.

### Am I a dry texter or just busy?

If you only text dry on busy days, you're busy. If your texts are short even when you have time, you're probably a dry texter.

### How can you tell if someone is a dry texter?

Check if they reply consistently, text first sometimes and act warmer in person. Dry texters are dry with everyone. If they're only dry with you, it may be low interest.

### Is dry texting a red flag?

Not on its own. Lots of people just don't like texting. It becomes a concern when it comes with other signs, like avoiding plans or never texting first.

### Can a dry texter like you?

Yes. Many dry texters show interest in other ways: they reply, they make plans and they show up. Watch what they do more than how long their texts are.
