**Short answer:** to analyze a Telegram chat, export it from Telegram Desktop on a computer with the format set to "Machine-readable JSON", then upload the result.json file (or the zipped export folder) to The Cringe. You get stats for each person, like who texts first and average reply time, plus an AI reading of each person's interest level. The Telegram phone apps cannot export chat history, so you need the desktop app for this one step.

## What a Telegram chat analyzer does

Scrolling up through months of messages tells you very little. You remember the sweet messages and the long silences, and your brain fills in the rest.

A chat analyzer reads the whole conversation, from the first message to the last, and counts. Who writes more. Who starts the conversations. Who takes hours to reply and who answers in seconds. Then the AI part reads the tone and tells you what the patterns might mean.

The Cringe started as a WhatsApp chat analyzer. It now also reads Telegram exports, Instagram and Messenger downloads, and LINE chats. It works with **1-on-1 chats only**, so groups and channels are not supported.

## How to export a Telegram chat (step by step)

**You need Telegram Desktop on a computer.** The Telegram apps for iPhone and Android cannot export chat history, and Telegram Web cannot do it either. Install Telegram Desktop from Telegram's official website (it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux) and log in with your phone number.

On a Mac, there is also an app called Telegram for macOS, which is a different app. If you can't find the export option there, install Telegram Desktop instead.

Then follow these steps:

1. Open Telegram Desktop and click the chat with the person you want to analyze.
2. Click the **three dots menu** (⋮) in the top right corner of the chat.
3. Click **Export chat history**.
4. Under "Media export settings", untick **Photos, Videos, Voice messages, Video messages, Stickers, GIFs and Files**. The analyzer only needs the text, and this keeps the export small and fast.
5. Under "Location and format", choose **Machine-readable JSON**. Don't pick "Human-readable HTML", because The Cringe reads the JSON file.
6. Leave the time range on "From: the oldest message, to: present" so you get the whole chat.
7. Check the download path, so you know which folder the export goes to.
8. Click **Export** and wait. When it is done, click **Show my data**.
9. Telegram creates a folder named **ChatExport** plus the date. Inside it, you will find a file called **result.json**.
10. Upload result.json to [The Cringe chat analyzer](https://thecringe.app). You can also zip the whole ChatExport folder and upload the zip.

Telegram changes small things in its menus from time to time. If a label looks a little different on your screen, pick the closest one.

### If Telegram asks you to wait

If you logged in to Telegram Desktop very recently, Telegram may make you wait before the export can start. This is a security check. It also sends a notice to your other devices, so you can stop the export if it wasn't you. The message tells you how long to wait. Come back after that time and export again from the same computer.

## Which Telegram file to upload

| What you have | What to do |
|---|---|
| result.json from "Export chat history" | Upload it as it is |
| The whole ChatExport folder | Zip it and upload the zip |
| An HTML export (messages.html) | Export again and choose Machine-readable JSON |
| A full account export from Settings, Advanced, "Export Telegram data" | Export just the one chat with "Export chat history" |
| A group chat or a channel | Not supported, only 1-on-1 chats work |

The full account export holds all your chats in one file, so the analyzer can't know which one you mean. That is why the single chat export works best.

## What the Telegram chat report shows

The report puts both people side by side. For each person, you see:

- **Messages sent:** the total count for each side
- **First message date:** when the chat started
- **Average reply time:** how long each person usually takes to answer
- **Who texts first:** who starts conversations more often
- **Longest message:** the biggest wall of text each person sent
- **Top words:** the words each person uses most

Telegram removes deleted messages for good, so they are not in the export and can't be counted for Telegram chats.

The **AI report** goes deeper. It gives:

- An **interest level** for each person
- **Attachment styles** (anxious, avoidant or secure)
- **Red flags**, with real quotes from your chat
- A **final verdict** on what is going on

You can read more about how the AI part works on the [AI relationship analyzer](https://thecringe.app/relationship-analyzer) page.

**Price:** uploading your chat and the instant preview are free, with no sign-up. The full report is blurred until you get Premium, which costs $4.99 per week or $19 per year. You can cancel anytime.

## How to read your Telegram chat statistics

Numbers are a starting point, not a final answer. A few tips:

- **Reply time depends on the person.** Some people answer everyone slowly. Compare their reply time with how they act in real life, and with how fast they were at the start. Our guide on [what reply time really means](https://thecringe.app/blog/reply-time-meaning) explains the common patterns.
- **Message count is not everything.** One person can send many short messages while the other starts every conversation. Read more about [who texts first and what it says](https://thecringe.app/blog/who-texts-first).
- **Look at changes over time.** A chat that was busy and is now quiet tells a different story than a chat that was always slow.
- **Context still matters.** If you see each other every day, you may text less. That is normal.

## What your Telegram chat can show you

Your chat can't read anyone's mind. But it can show patterns that are hard to see from the inside. You might find out that you start most conversations, or that their replies got slower over the last few months. You might also find out that things are more equal than you feared.

The AI interest level and verdict give you a calm second opinion, based on the real messages and not on your worst 2am thoughts. Use it as one more piece of the picture, then talk to the person if something feels off.

**Stop guessing. Check your real chat.** Drop your WhatsApp export and see who texts first, who replies faster and who cares more. Free to upload with no sign-up. Your copy is encrypted and you can delete it anytime. [Analyze my chat for free](https://thecringe.app)

## Other chats you can analyze

- **Instagram or Messenger:** download your messages from Meta and upload one conversation. See the [Instagram DM analyzer](https://thecringe.app/instagram-chat-analyzer) for the exact steps.
- **WhatsApp:** export the chat on your phone with our [WhatsApp export guide](https://thecringe.app/how-to-export-whatsapp-chat). On a computer, the Chrome extension works on WhatsApp Web only, so for Telegram you always upload the file.

## FAQ

### Can I export a Telegram chat on my phone?

No. The Telegram apps for iPhone and Android cannot export chat history. You need Telegram Desktop on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer, where you open the chat, click the three dots menu and choose "Export chat history".

### Does the Telegram chat analyzer work with group chats?

No. The Cringe only analyzes 1-on-1 chats. If the export has more than two people writing, you will see a message that it is a group chat.

### Can I export a Telegram secret chat?

No. Secret chats only live on the devices where they were started, and Telegram Desktop does not show them. So there is no way to export them for analysis. Normal 1-on-1 chats work fine.

### Should I choose HTML or JSON when I export from Telegram?

Choose "Machine-readable JSON". It creates the result.json file that the analyzer reads. If you already exported in HTML, just export the chat again with JSON.

### Is the Telegram chat analyzer free?

Uploading your chat and getting the instant preview is free, with no sign-up. The stats and the AI report are blurred until you get Premium, which costs $4.99 per week or $19 per year, and you can cancel anytime.
