**Short answer:** to use the text message analyzer on Android texts, back up your messages with the free app **SMS Backup & Restore** (by SyncTech) from Google Play, then upload the .xml file (or the .zip) to The Cringe and pick the person from the list. You see who texts first, how fast each person replies and who double texts, plus an AI reading of each person's interest level. On an iPhone? Use the [iMessage analyzer](https://thecringe.app/imessage-analyzer) instead.

## What a text message analyzer does

When you like someone, every text feels like a clue. Why did they reply so fast yesterday and so slowly today? Do you always text first? Is it all in your head?

A text message analyzer reads the whole conversation, from the first text to the last, and counts. Who writes more. Who starts the conversations. Who replies in seconds and who leaves you waiting. Then the AI part reads the tone and tells you what the patterns might mean.

The Cringe started as a WhatsApp chat analyzer. It now also reads Android texts, iMessage, Telegram, Instagram, Messenger and Snapchat. It works with **1-on-1 chats only**. The Cringe is a website and a Chrome extension, so there is nothing of ours to install on your phone.

## Analyze text messages in a relationship

Texting says a lot about a relationship, but it is hard to see the pattern from the inside. You remember the one late reply and forget the ten quick ones. Or the other way round.

Here is what the numbers can show you:

- **Who texts first.** If one person starts almost every conversation, that tells you who is putting in the effort. Read [who texts first and what it says](https://thecringe.app/blog/who-texts-first).
- **Reply times.** How long each person usually takes to answer, and if that changed over time. Our guide on [what reply time really means](https://thecringe.app/blog/reply-time-meaning) explains the common patterns.
- **Double texting.** Who sends a second text before getting a reply. Read more about [double texting](https://thecringe.app/blog/double-texting).
- **Interest level.** The AI reads the messages and gives each person an interest score, with real quotes from your chat.

None of this can read anyone's mind. But it gives you a calm second opinion, based on the real texts and not on your worst 2am thoughts.

## How to export text messages from Android

**Google Messages has no export button.** You can't save a whole conversation from inside the app. So you need a helper app. The common free one is **SMS Backup & Restore** by SyncTech.

1. Install **SMS Backup & Restore** (by SyncTech) from Google Play.
2. Open it and tap **Set up a backup**.
3. Turn on **Messages**. You can turn off Calls, because the analyzer only needs your texts.
4. **Want only one chat?** In the backup's advanced options, you can choose to back up **selected conversations** only. Pick the person you want to analyze. This keeps the file small.
5. Choose where to save the backup. **Phone storage** or **Google Drive** both work well.
6. Start the backup and wait until it is done.
7. Find the file. It is called something like **sms-20261022120000.xml**. If you turned on compression, it ends in **.xml.zip**.

Apps change small things in their menus from time to time. If a label looks a little different on your screen, pick the closest one.

**RCS chats are included.** On supported phones, the app also backs up RCS messages (the chat features in Google Messages), so those texts end up in the same file.

**Tip:** the backup may show people by phone number, not by name. So check the number of the person you want before you upload.

## Upload the file and pick the person

1. Go to [thecringe.app/analyze](https://thecringe.app/analyze). You can do it on your phone, or move the file to a computer first.
2. Upload the **.xml** file, or the **.zip** if compression was on.
3. The backup holds texts with many people, so the site shows a list. **Pick the person** you want to analyze.
4. Wait a few seconds for your stats.

| What you have | What to do |
|---|---|
| sms-....xml from SMS Backup & Restore | Upload it, then pick the person |
| sms-....xml.zip (compression on) | Upload the zip, then pick the person |
| A calls-....xml file | That one holds calls only, upload the sms file |
| A group chat | Not supported, only 1-on-1 chats work |
| Texts on an iPhone | Use the [iMessage analyzer](https://thecringe.app/imessage-analyzer) |

## What the text message report shows

The report puts both people side by side. For each person, you see:

- **Messages sent:** the total count for each side
- **First message date:** the oldest text in the backup
- **Average reply time:** how long each person usually takes to answer
- **Who texts first:** who starts conversations more often
- **Longest message:** the biggest wall of text each person sent
- **Top words:** the words each person uses most

The **AI report** goes deeper. It gives:

- An **interest level** for each person
- **Attachment styles** (anxious, avoidant or secure)
- **Red flags**, with real quotes from your chat
- A **final verdict** on what is going on

You can read more about how the AI part works on the [AI relationship analyzer](https://thecringe.app/relationship-analyzer) page.

**Is the text message analyzer free?** Uploading your texts and trying it is free, with no sign-up. The full report is unlocked with Premium. You can [see pricing here](https://thecringe.app/pricing).

## Is it private?

Here is what happens to your texts:

- The **stats are computed in your browser**.
- The website saves an **encrypted copy** of the chat you upload, so you can reopen your report later. You can delete it any time in [My reports](https://thecringe.app/reports).
- For the **AI report**, a sample of messages goes to our AI provider, with phone numbers, emails and links removed.
- We **never sell** your chats.

## Honest limits

- **Only what is on your phone.** If you deleted old texts, they are not in the backup, so the report can't count them.
- **Photos and videos are not text.** The analyzer reads what people wrote, not what is in a picture.
- **Group chats don't work.** Only 1-on-1 chats are analyzed.
- **SMS Backup & Restore is made by SyncTech, not by us.** We only read the file it creates.
- **Texting is only part of the story.** If you see each other every day, you may text less. That is normal.

## How to read your texting stats

- **Look at changes over time.** A chat that was busy and is now quiet tells a different story than a chat that was always slow. Our guide on [losing interest over text](https://thecringe.app/blog/losing-interest-over-text) covers the signs.
- **Fast replies but never the first text?** That is its own pattern. See [replies fast but never texts first](https://thecringe.app/blog/replies-fast-never-texts-first).
- **Silence has many reasons.** If you feel [left on read](https://thecringe.app/blog/left-on-read), look at the pattern over weeks, not one evening.
