The Cringe (thecringe.app and the The Cringe Chrome extension) analyzes WhatsApp conversations you choose to give it. This page explains what happens to that data.

Your chat file

When you drop a WhatsApp export on thecringe.app, the file is read inside your browser. It is not uploaded to our servers. The free statistics (message counts, reply times, conversation starters, top words, deleted-message counts) are computed on your device.

The AI analysis (subscribers only)

If you subscribe and unlock the AI analysis, we send a slice of up to the 800 most recent text messages to our API, after removing links, email addresses and phone numbers in your browser. Our AI provider processes it to produce your report. We do not keep the message text after the analysis is returned.

What we store

  • A random device identifier stored in your browser, used to remember your subscription.
  • Your subscription status and Stripe identifiers. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see your card details.
  • Coarse usage events (for example “report shown”, “checkout started”) without message content.
