How to See Deleted Messages on WhatsApp (What Really Works)

Short answer: WhatsApp has no button to see a message someone deleted. On Android, the best chance is your phone's notification history, which can keep the text of the notification you got before it was deleted. On iPhone, there is no easy way. Restoring an old backup can bring back messages in some cases, but you lose newer messages, so be careful.

What "This message was deleted" means

When someone uses Delete for everyone, the message is replaced by "This message was deleted" on both phones. They can do this for about two days after sending it. If you deleted a message yourself, you see "You deleted this message".

The text is removed from WhatsApp on your phone, which is why there is no simple way to read it again.

Method 1: Notification history (Android)

Android 11 and newer can keep a history of the notifications you received. If the message showed up as a notification before it was deleted, its text may still be there.

1. Open Settings on your phone.
2. Go to Notifications (on some phones: Apps and notifications, or Advanced settings).
3. Tap Notification history and turn it on.

Important: it only works for notifications that arrive after you turn it on. Turn it on now for next time. It also only shows short previews, not photos, and only if WhatsApp notifications were on and the chat was not open at that moment.

Method 2: A backup from before the message was deleted

If your WhatsApp backup ran after the message arrived and before it was deleted, the backup may still contain it.

• Android: backups go to Google Drive. iPhone: backups go to iCloud.
• To restore, you must uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp and restore the backup.

Be careful: you lose every message that arrived after that backup. For one deleted message, this is rarely worth it.

Method 3: An exported chat

If you exported the chat before the message was deleted, the text is in the file. This also works the other way: export important chats from time to time, and you always have a copy.

Method 4: Just ask

It sounds too simple, but often a calm "what did you delete? 👀" gets a real answer. And how they answer tells you something too.

What doesn't work (or isn't safe)

• "Deleted message recovery" apps. Most of them only read your notifications, the same as Method 1, but they ask for access to all your notifications from every app. Many are full of ads, and some are risky for your privacy.
• Spy apps on someone else's phone. Reading another person's messages without permission is a serious breach of trust, and in many countries it's illegal.
• iPhone tricks. iOS has no notification history, so tips that promise to show deleted WhatsApp messages on iPhone usually don't work.

What a deleted message usually means

Most deleted messages are boring: a typo, a message sent to the wrong chat, a photo that was too big. One or two now and then mean nothing.

A pattern is different. If one person deletes a lot of messages, especially late at night or right after emotional moments, they may be rewriting what they really wanted to say, or hiding it. In a relationship chat, that's worth noticing.

The Cringe counts deleted messages per person in your chat for free, together with who texts first and who replies faster. If you have ever wondered "who deletes more, me or them?", now you can know.

## FAQ

Can you see a deleted message on WhatsApp without an app?

Yes, on Android, with Notification history in your phone's settings, if it was turned on before the message arrived. On iPhone, there is no built-in way.

How long do you have to delete a message for everyone?

About two days after you send it. After that, you can only delete it for yourself.

Does the other person know if I delete a message?

Yes. If you use Delete for everyone, they see "This message was deleted" in the chat. If you use Delete for me, nothing changes on their side.

Can I see a deleted photo on WhatsApp?

Sometimes. If your phone saves WhatsApp media to the gallery automatically, the photo may still be in your gallery even after it was deleted from the chat.

Does WhatsApp keep deleted messages on its servers?

WhatsApp says messages are end-to-end encrypted and not stored on its servers after delivery, so there is nothing to request from WhatsApp.

Can I see who deleted messages in a chat?

Yes. Each deleted message shows "This message was deleted" in the place of the person who sent it. To count them for a whole chat, drop your export into The Cringe.
