Messenger chat analyzer

Messenger Chat Analyzer: Export Messenger Chats and See the Stats

Analyze a Facebook Messenger chat. Export your Messenger chat history, encrypted chats included, upload the file and see who texts first, reply times and interest.

Upload my chat

Short answer: to use the Messenger chat analyzer, first export your Messenger chat history, then upload the file to The Cringe and pick the person. Most 1-on-1 Messenger chats are now end-to-end encrypted, so you download them from Message storage on messenger.com. Older or non-encrypted chats come from the normal Facebook "Export your information" download. You get Messenger chat statistics like who texts first and reply times, plus an AI reading of each person's interest level.

What a Messenger chat analyzer does

Messenger shows you one message at a time. It never shows the big picture: who starts most conversations, who replies in seconds and who leaves the other person waiting.

A chat analyzer reads the whole conversation and counts. Then the AI part reads the tone and tells you what the patterns might mean.

The Cringe started as a WhatsApp chat analyzer. It now also reads Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat and Telegram downloads. It works with 1-on-1 chats only. The Cringe is not affiliated with Facebook, Messenger or Meta.

First: is your chat encrypted?

Since late 2023, most 1-on-1 Messenger chats are end-to-end encrypted. This matters, because encrypted chats are not in Facebook's normal "Download your information" file. If you use the normal download for an encrypted chat, the chat will be missing or stop at an older date.

So there are two ways to export a Messenger chat:

Your chat How to export it
Encrypted (most 1-on-1 chats today) Download secure storage data on messenger.com
Older or not encrypted Facebook "Export your information" in Accounts Center

If you are not sure, start with the encrypted way. It covers most personal chats.

How to export encrypted Messenger chats

You need a computer for this. Chrome works better than Safari here.

  1. Open messenger.com and log in.
  2. Click your profile photo.
  3. Click Privacy & safety.
  4. Click End-to-end encrypted chats.
  5. Click Message storage. Secure storage must be turned on. If it is off, turn it on first.
  6. Click Download secure storage data, then Download file.
  7. You get a file called messages.zip.
  8. Upload messages.zip as it is to thecringe.app/analyze. Don't unzip it.
  9. The file holds many chats, so the site shows a list. Pick the person you want to analyze.

Meta changes these menus now and then. If a label looks a little different on your screen, pick the closest one.

How to export Messenger chat history (older chats)

For older or non-encrypted chats, use the normal Facebook download.

  1. In the Facebook app or on facebook.com, open Accounts Center.
  2. Tap Your information and permissions.
  3. Tap Export your information, then Export to device.
  4. Choose Messages only.
  5. Set Format to JSON. The HTML format will not work with the analyzer.
  6. Set Date range to All time, so the report gets the real first message date.
  7. Start the export, wait for the email, then download the file.

Meta can take from a few minutes to a few days to prepare it. Big exports can come in several zips.

You can upload the zip and pick the person from the list. Or, if you unzipped it, open your_facebook_activity, then messages, then inbox, find the folder named after the person and upload the message_1.json inside it. If the folder also has message_2.json and more, zip that one folder and upload the zip, so every part is read.

Which Messenger file to upload

What you have What to do
messages.zip from secure storage Upload it as it is, then pick the person
The zip from "Export your information" (JSON) Upload it, then pick the person
message_1.json of one person Upload it as it is
A download in HTML format Export again with format JSON
A group chat Not supported, only 1-on-1 chats work

Your Messenger Wrapped

Messenger does not give you a "Wrapped" for one chat. The Cringe does. Upload the chat and see your year, or your whole history, in numbers: how many messages each person sent, who texts first, reply times and the words you both use most.

What the Messenger chat statistics show

The report puts both people side by side. For each person, you see:

  • Messages sent: the total count for each side
  • First message date: when the chat started
  • Average reply time: how long each person usually takes to answer
  • Who texts first: who starts conversations more often
  • Longest message: the biggest wall of text each person sent
  • Top words: the words each person uses most

The AI report goes deeper. It gives an interest level for each person, their attachment styles, red flags with real quotes from your chat, and a final verdict. The AI relationship analyzer page explains how it reads a chat.

Price: uploading your chat and trying it is free, with no sign-up. The full report is unlocked with Premium. You can see pricing here.

Is the Facebook chat analyzer private?

Here is what happens to your chat:

  • The stats are computed in your browser.
  • The website saves an encrypted copy of the chat you upload, so you can reopen your report later. You can delete it any time in My reports.
  • For the AI report, a sample of messages goes to our AI provider, with phone numbers, emails and links removed.
  • We never sell your chats.

How to read your Messenger chat stats

  • Reactions are not replies. Likes and reactions don't show real effort. Check who writes real messages.
  • Fast replies are not the whole story. Some people answer in seconds but never start a conversation. Read what it means when someone replies fast but never texts first.
  • Reply time depends on the person. Our guide on what reply time really means explains the common patterns.
  • Look at changes over time. A chat that was busy and is now quiet tells a different story than a chat that was always slow.

FAQ

How do I export a Messenger chat?

Most 1-on-1 chats are encrypted, so open messenger.com on a computer, click your profile photo, then Privacy & safety, End-to-end encrypted chats, Message storage and Download secure storage data. Upload the messages.zip you get and pick the person. For older chats, use Facebook's "Export your information" with format JSON.

Why is my Messenger chat missing from my Facebook download?

The chat is most likely end-to-end encrypted. Encrypted chats are not in the normal "Download your information" file. Use the secure storage download on messenger.com instead.

Can I export Messenger chat history on my phone?

The secure storage download for encrypted chats works on messenger.com on a computer, and Chrome works better than Safari. The normal Facebook export can be started on your phone, but uploading the file is easier on a computer.

Is there a Messenger Wrapped?

Not from Messenger itself. The Cringe gives you one for any 1-on-1 chat: messages sent, who texts first, reply times and top words, side by side.

Does the Messenger chat analyzer work with group chats?

No. The Cringe only analyzes 1-on-1 chats. If your file has many chats, you pick one person from the list.

Is the Facebook chat analyzer free?

Uploading your chat and trying it is free, with no sign-up. The full report, with all stats and the AI reading, is unlocked with Premium.
