How to See Old Snapchat Messages (and What You Can't Get Back)

Want to read old Snapchat messages? How saved chats and the My Data download work, why deleted chats are gone, and how to keep every message from now on.

Short answer: you can see old Snapchat messages only if they were saved or not deleted yet. Scroll up in the chat to see saved messages, or download your chat history from Snapchat's My Data page to get every saved message with every friend, with dates and times. Messages that Snapchat already deleted are gone for everyone, and no app can bring them back.

Why old Snapchat messages disappear

Snapchat deletes chats on a timer. By default, a message in a 1-on-1 chat is deleted 24 hours after both of you viewed it, or 31 days after it was sent if nobody opened it. You can change this per chat to "After Viewing", "7 Days After Viewing" or "Never".

A message stays longer when someone saves it (press and hold the message, then Save). Saved messages stay in the chat until someone unsaves them.

So "old messages" on Snapchat really means saved messages, plus anything that is still inside its timer.

Method 1: Scroll up in the chat

Open the conversation and scroll up. Every message that you or your friend saved is still there, with a grey background. This is the quickest way to reread an old moment.

You can also use the search bar at the top of the Chat screen to find a friend, then scroll through what was saved.

Method 2: Download your Snapchat chat history

If you want everything at once, with dates and times, download your data:

  1. In Snapchat, tap your Profile, then the gear icon.
  2. Scroll to Privacy Controls and tap My Data. (On a computer: accounts.snapchat.com, then My Data.)
  3. Select Chat History. Tick Export JSON Files if you want to analyze it later.
  4. Choose the date range, check your email and tap Submit.

Snapchat emails you a download link, usually within a few hours. Inside the zip, your chat history lists every saved message with every friend.

Reading thousands of lines in a file is not fun, though. If what you really want to know is who texts first, who replies faster or who cares more, upload that zip to the Snapchat chat analyzer and pick your friend. You get the numbers side by side in seconds.

Method 3: Keep every message from now on

You can't bring back deleted chats, but you can stop losing new ones:

  1. On the Chat screen, press and hold your friend's name.
  2. Tap Chat and Notification Settings.
  3. Tap Delete Chats and choose Never.

From then on, every message in that chat is kept. Your friend sees a small notice in the chat that the setting changed, and either of you can change it back.

Can you see deleted Snapchat messages?

No. Once Snapchat's timer deletes a message, it is not in the app and not in your My Data download. If someone cleared a message they sent, you may see that a message was deleted, but not what it said.

What doesn't work (or isn't safe)

  • "Recover deleted Snapchat messages" apps. They can't reach Snapchat's servers. Many only read your phone's notifications, and some ask for your Snapchat password. Never give it: that is how accounts get stolen.
  • Phone cache tricks. Old tutorials about digging in the phone's storage are out of date and don't work on current versions.
  • Spy apps on someone else's phone. Reading another person's messages without permission breaks their trust, and in many countries it is illegal.
  • Notification history (Android). It can show the preview of a message you received while it was on, but only short text and only from the moment you turned it on.

What your old Snapchat messages can tell you

Saved messages are a picture of the moments you two wanted to keep. Looking at them as numbers can be revealing: who saves more, who starts the conversation, who answers in minutes and who in hours.

Just remember that the numbers only cover what was saved. If you saved all of their messages and few of yours, they will look more active than they are. Our guide on who texts first explains how to read that pattern, and what reply time means helps with the waiting part.

FAQ

How do I see old Snapchat messages?

Scroll up in the chat to see saved messages, or download your chat history from Settings, Privacy Controls, My Data. The download holds every saved message with every friend, with dates and times.

Can I recover deleted Snapchat messages?

No. Messages deleted by Snapchat's timer are gone for everyone, and they are not in your data download. Apps that promise to recover them can't, and some try to steal your password.

How long does Snapchat keep chats?

By default, 24 hours after both people viewed a message, or 31 days after it was sent if nobody opened it. Saved messages stay until someone unsaves them, and you can set a chat to never delete.

Does my friend know if I download our Snapchat chat history?

No. Downloading your data from My Data doesn't notify anyone. Changing the chat's delete setting to Never does show a small notice in the chat.

Can I see how many messages I sent to one friend on Snapchat?

Not inside Snapchat. Download your chat history and upload it to the Snapchat chat analyzer: it counts the messages each of you sent, who texts first and who replies faster.

Is Snap Recap the same as my chat history?

No. Snap Recap is Snapchat's year-end highlight video. Your chat history is the list of saved messages you get from My Data.
