How to tell if he is talking to someone else: the real signs, what is just anxiety, why spying on his phone backfires, and how to bring it up calmly.

Short answer: you usually can't know for sure from the outside, but some changes are worth noticing: he replies much slower than before, he's vague about his evenings, he protects his phone more, and the effort he puts into you drops. One sign means little. Several new changes at once mean it's time for a calm, direct talk. Don't spy on his phone: it breaks trust, can be illegal, and still won't give you peace.
That feeling in your stomach is real, even if you don't know yet what it means. Maybe he's slower to reply. Maybe he smiled at his phone and put it face down. This guide helps you sort real signs from anxious overreading, and shows you how to get an honest answer.
First: is this a relationship or a talking stage?
The answer changes a lot depending on where you are.
- In a relationship you both agreed on: talking to someone else in a flirty or secret way breaks a promise. That's a trust problem.
- In a talking stage or situationship: if you never agreed to be exclusive, he may be talking to other people, and so may you. That's not cheating, even if it hurts. The real question is "do we want the same thing?"
If you're not sure which one you're in, read what is a talking stage and situationship meaning. Many people suffer for weeks because they never had the "are we exclusive?" talk.
Real signs he might be talking to someone else
These are signs worth noticing, especially if they are new and come together.
- His reply times changed a lot. He used to answer in minutes, now it's hours, often at the same times every evening.
- His texts got shorter and flatter. Fewer questions, fewer jokes, less "how was your day?"
- He stopped texting first. You now start almost every chat. (Who texts first?)
- He's online a lot, but not with you. Busy on his phone, slow with you.
- He protects his phone more than before. New lock, screen always down, takes it to the bathroom.
- Vague plans. "I'm out," "with friends," with fewer details than he used to give.
- A new name keeps coming up, or one disappears. A "friend" he mentions a lot, or someone he suddenly never talks about.
- Less time for you, but no clear reason. Plans get moved, weekends are "busy."
- Defensive answers to simple questions. "Why are you asking?" when you asked "how was your night?"
If several of these sound like what's happening, it may be that he's talking to someone, or it may be that he's losing interest in general. Both deserve an honest talk. For deeper worries in a committed relationship, our list of texting signs he might be cheating goes further.
Real signs or anxiety? How to tell the difference
When we feel insecure, our brain looks for proof. A late reply becomes "he's with someone." A like on a girl's photo becomes "he likes her." This is normal, and it doesn't mean you're "crazy." It just means you need facts, not guesses.
Social media makes this worse. In one study of students, people who spent more time on Facebook felt more Facebook-related jealousy, partly because the site shows you a lot of unclear information about your partner (Muise, Christofides and Desmarais, 2009). And you're far from alone: in a Pew Research Center survey, 23% of US adults with a partner on social media said they had felt jealous or unsure because of how their partner interacts with others there.
| Probably worth talking about | Probably anxiety talking |
|---|---|
| A clear change from how he used to be | He's always been a slow texter |
| Many changes in the same few weeks | One slow reply on a busy day |
| He hides things he used to share | He has a normal phone lock |
| Plans keep falling through | One cancelled plan with a good reason |
| He gets angry at simple questions | He's tired and short after work |
| He likes and comments on one person a lot, at odd hours | He liked a photo of someone |
Ask yourself: "Is this new? Is it many things? Would I worry about this if I felt secure?" If you often feel this way in every relationship, the attachment style test might help you understand why.
How to tell if he likes someone else
Sometimes it's not secret texting, but a crush. Signs he may like someone else:
- He talks about one person often, and his face changes when he does.
- He compares you to her, or suddenly has her opinions.
- He changes how he dresses or what he posts, and it seems aimed at someone.
- He's more distant with you, but happy and "lighter" in general.
None of these proves anything. People can have small crushes and still choose their partner. What matters is what he does with it, and whether he's honest when you ask.
What NOT to do
When you're scared, it's tempting to look for proof. Please don't do these:
- Don't install spy or tracking apps. Secretly putting monitoring software on someone's phone can be illegal, and many of these apps are unsafe. The US Federal Trade Commission banned one stalkerware company, SpyFone, from the surveillance business. The FTC said its apps secretly collected people's photos, texts, web history and location, and that the data was exposed to hackers (FTC, 2021).
- Don't go through his phone. Many people feel the urge: Pew found that 34% of US adults with a partner had looked through that partner's phone without them knowing. But even if you find nothing, the doubt stays. If he finds out, the talk becomes about your snooping, not his behavior.
- Don't make fake accounts to test him. It feels clever at 2 am. It almost always makes things worse.
- Don't ask his friends to spy for you. It puts them in the middle and spreads the story.
And no honest tool can show you who someone else is chatting with. Here's why apps that promise that are not real.
How to talk about it
A calm talk gives you more truth than any amount of checking.
- Pick the right moment. In person or on a call, when you're both calm. Not by text at midnight, not in the middle of a fight.
- Start with what you noticed, not an accusation. "You reply much slower than before, and you seem far away. I feel a bit lost."
- Ask an open question. "Is something going on? Is there someone else?"
- Listen to the answer, and to how he gives it. Calm explanations and reassurance are a good sign. Anger, blame, or "you're crazy" are not.
- Say what you need. More time together, more honesty, or a clear answer about where this is going.
Some ways to say it:
- "I've noticed things changed between us lately. Can we talk about it?"
- "I don't want to snoop or guess. I'd rather just ask: are you talking to someone else?"
- "I care about you, and I need us to be honest with each other."
The exclusivity talk in a talking stage
If you're not official yet, you can't expect exclusivity you never asked for. But you can ask for it. It's a normal question, not a needy one.
- "I've stopped seeing other people. Are you still talking to others?"
- "I really like where this is going. Are we exclusive, or not yet?"
- "I want to know where we stand. What are you looking for?"
If he says he wants to keep things open and you don't, that's useful information. It's okay to say "I want something exclusive, so I'm going to step back." You're not giving an ultimatum, you're being honest about what you need.
This works the same for every couple. Whether it's a boyfriend, girlfriend or partner, the signs and the talk are the same.
Look at your own chat, not his
You can't see his other chats, and you don't need to. Your own chat with him often shows the change clearly. If his replies got slower, if you now start every conversation, if he sends fewer messages than a few months ago, it's there in the history.
The Cringe's relationship analyzer reads your exported chat (WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and more) and shows who texts first, average reply times and message counts for each person, so you can see if things really changed or if it's mostly a feeling. The Premium AI report adds an interest level for each of you. It only reads the chat you upload, never anyone else's. For a quick structured check of what you've noticed, try the is he cheating quiz.
FAQ
How can I tell if he is talking to someone else?
Look for new changes that come together: slower replies, shorter texts, a protected phone, vague plans and less effort with you. One sign alone means little. If you see several, talk to him calmly and directly.
How do I know if my boyfriend is talking to another girl over text?
You can't know for sure without him telling you, and you shouldn't check his phone. Notice clear changes in how he texts you and how he treats his phone, then ask him openly.
Is it cheating if he's talking to someone else in the talking stage?
Not if you never agreed to be exclusive. It can still hurt, so ask him directly where you stand and what he's looking for.
Should I check his phone to find out?
No. It breaks trust, can be illegal, and often doesn't give you peace even if you find nothing. An honest talk works better.
How do I ask him if he's talking to someone else without sounding jealous?
Start with what you noticed and how you feel, not an accusation. "I've noticed we talk less and I feel far from you. Is something going on?" is calm and fair.
What if he says no but I still don't believe him?
Give it time and watch whether his actions match his words. If you can't trust him even when nothing new happens, talk about it together, or consider if this relationship gives you what you need.
