WhatsApp Signs Explained: Ticks, Last Seen, Online, Blocks
What every WhatsApp sign really means: one tick, blue ticks, last seen, online, deleted messages, blocks and mutes. What each one proves, and what it doesn't.

Short answer: WhatsApp shows you only a few signs about another person: ticks, "last seen", "online", their photo and status, and "This message was deleted". Each one tells you something small and technical, like "delivered" or "the app is open". None of them tells you who they talk to, how they feel or why they didn't reply. Read the signs together, look at the pattern over weeks, and use the guides below for the details of each one.
Most worry about WhatsApp starts with one tiny sign. One grey tick that stays too long. "Online" with no reply. A profile photo that vanished. This guide puts every sign in one place, says what it really means, and links to the full guide for each.
All WhatsApp signs at a glance
| Sign | What it means | What it does not prove | Full guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| One grey tick | Sent, not delivered yet | That you are blocked | One tick meaning |
| Two grey ticks | Delivered to their phone | That they ignored it | One tick meaning |
| Two blue ticks | They opened the chat | That they will reply soon | Left on read |
| "Online" | WhatsApp is open right now | That they saw your message | Online but not replying |
| "Last seen" | The last time the app was open | Who they talked to | Last seen meaning |
| No last seen, no photo | Privacy settings, or a block | A block, on its own | Blocked on WhatsApp |
| You stopped seeing their status | They hid it, stopped posting, or removed your number | That they deleted you | Deleted your number |
| Slow replies, ticks normal | Many things, including mute or archive | That they muted you | Muted or archived |
| "This message was deleted" | They used Delete for everyone | What it said | Deleted messages |
The last column is where the detail lives. The rest of this page explains how the signs fit together.
Ticks: sent, delivered, read
WhatsApp's ticks are the most reliable sign you have, because they come straight from the system. According to WhatsApp's read receipts help page, one grey tick means sent, two grey ticks mean delivered to their phone, and two blue ticks mean read. In a group, the ticks change only when every member has received or read the message.
Two things make ticks less clear than they look:
- Read receipts can be off. If either of you turned them off, you only see grey ticks in a 1-on-1 chat, even after they read it. Groups and played voice messages still show receipts.
- People can read without opening the chat. A notification, a widget or a preview can show your message while the ticks stay grey. Here are the ways people read messages without blue ticks.
So two grey ticks do not always mean "unread", and two blue ticks with no answer is just being left on read. Once is life. A pattern is information.
Last seen and online
"Online" means WhatsApp is open and connected right now. "Last seen" is the last time it was. That is all they show. WhatsApp's page about last seen and online says plainly that being online does not mean someone read your message.
Both can be hidden. People choose who sees them: everyone, their contacts, their contacts except some people, or nobody. And the rule works both ways: if you hide your last seen, you can't see other people's either (WhatsApp privacy settings). So a missing last seen is usually a setting, not a message to you.
The painful one is seeing them online while your message waits. They may be in a group, on a call or answering work. Read online but not replying for the innocent reasons and the real warning signs, and last seen meaning for every reason it can disappear.
Blocked, deleted number, or muted?
These three get mixed up all the time, but they leave very different signs.
- Blocked: your messages stay on one grey tick, calls don't connect, and you can't see their last seen, online or photo changes. WhatsApp lists these signs on its page about being blocked by someone, and adds that they can have other causes. Full guide: how to know if someone blocked you.
- Deleted your number: your messages still get two ticks and calls still ring. You may lose their photo or status if they share those with contacts only. Full guide: how to know if someone deleted your number.
- Muted or archived: nothing changes on your side at all. Your messages arrive, ticks work, calls ring. The only clue is slower replies, and that has many causes. Full guide: how to know if you are muted or archived.
The fastest test is the ticks. If your messages get two ticks, you are not blocked.
Deleted messages
"This message was deleted" means the sender used Delete for everyone. WhatsApp's page on how to delete messages says they have about two days to do it, and that a deleted message can't be recovered unless it was in a backup. On Android, your phone's notification history can sometimes keep the text. Here is what really works to see deleted messages, and what is not safe.
One deleted message is almost always a typo or the wrong chat. Many deleted messages, at odd hours, in a relationship chat, are worth a calm talk.
What WhatsApp never shows
Some things are simply not visible, and no honest tool can show them:
- who someone is chatting with
- what they write in other chats
- whether they muted or archived you
- why they didn't reply
Chats are end-to-end encrypted, and WhatsApp keeps these things private on purpose. "Online trackers" and spy apps that promise more are often scams, and secretly getting into someone's phone can be illegal. How to read the signs together
A few simple rules save a lot of stress. They are our rules of thumb, not WhatsApp rules:
- Start with the ticks. Privacy settings can hide last seen, online, photos and blue ticks, but not the delivery ticks. One tick or two is the most solid fact you have.
- Never trust one sign alone. A missing photo, a hidden last seen or one slow reply each has several boring explanations.
- Compare with their normal. Someone who always replies in hours is not ignoring you today. Someone who used to reply in minutes and now takes a day changed something.
- Look at weeks, not minutes. Checking "last seen" ten times an evening makes anxiety worse and tells you almost nothing.
- Ask about the message, not the sign. "Did you see my message about Saturday?" works. "I can see you were online" starts a fight.
From signs to the full picture
Signs are moments. Your chat history is months of real behavior: who starts conversations, how fast each of you replies, who sends more and how often messages get deleted. That says much more than any tick.
You can export a WhatsApp chat in a few taps, even after a block, because the chat stays on your phone. Then the WhatsApp chat analyzer counts it all for both of you. Here are 3 ways to analyze a WhatsApp chat if you want to compare options.
FAQ
What is the most reliable sign on WhatsApp?
The ticks. One grey tick means not delivered, two grey ticks mean delivered, and two blue ticks mean read, if read receipts are on. Everything else, like last seen and photos, depends on privacy settings.
Can WhatsApp tell me if someone blocked me?
No. WhatsApp never confirms a block. If you see one tick for days, no last seen, no photo changes and calls that never connect, a block is likely, but not certain.
Does online mean they are talking to someone else?
No. Online only means the app is open. They could be in a group, on a call, watching status updates or reading a work message.
Why did their last seen disappear?
Usually because they changed their privacy settings, hid it from you, or because you hid your own last seen. A block is possible too, but it is the least common reason.
Can I see who someone talks to on WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp doesn't show anyone's chat list or contacts, and apps that promise this are often scams. Look at your own chat with them and talk.
