Short answer: text the same evening or the next morning. Waiting three days is an old rule, and today it usually looks like you're not interested. Keep the first text short and warm: say you had a good time, mention one real moment from the date, and, if you want to see them again, say so. Both people can send it, it doesn't have to be the guy.
The date is over. You're home, maybe on the sofa, phone in hand, thinking "do I text now? Is that too soon? What if they don't reply?" Here is a clear answer, with example texts you can copy.
How long to wait to text after a first date
You don't need to wait. The "3-day rule" came from a time of phone calls and playing hard to get. Today it mostly creates stress on both sides.
The research agrees. In a study of 543 adults, people rated a text sent the next morning as the best timing. A text right after the date came close. Waiting two days led to the lowest wish to keep dating (Teichmann and colleagues, 2025). The same study found that women were more sensitive to the timing than men.
Dating apps see the same thing. Hinge Labs found that 75% of Hinge daters expect a follow-up message the same day or the next day. And 49% of daters said they had held back from sending a follow-up after a great first date, because they were worried about coming on too strong. So if you're scared of looking too keen, you're in good company, but the other person is probably waiting for your text.
| When you text | How it usually feels to them |
|---|---|
| Same evening (when you get home) | Warm, keen, clear |
| Next morning | Ideal: thoughtful, not rushed |
| Later the next day | Still fine |
| 2 to 3 days later | "Were they even interested?" |
| A week later | Usually too late, unless you explain |
How long to wait to text her after a first date? Same answer. Same evening or next morning. This works for every kind of date, whoever you're dating.
What to text after a first date
Short beats long. One to three sentences is perfect. Here's a simple formula:
- Thank them or say you had fun.
- Mention one real detail from the date (this shows you were listening).
- Say what you want next, if you want something next.
Hinge's survey found that what people like most in a follow-up is general enthusiasm, and 47% prefer that you say you want to meet again without locking in a time or place yet (Hinge Labs, 2025). So you don't need a full plan in the first text.
If it went well
- "I had a really good time tonight. Still laughing about the waiter and the candle ๐ Would love to do it again."
- "Home safe! Thanks for tonight, that was the easiest first date I've had in a long time."
- "Morning! Just wanted to say I really enjoyed last night. You have to tell me how the story about your brother ends."
- "That ramen place was a great pick. Next time I choose? ๐"
If you're not sure how it went
- "Thanks for tonight, it was nice to meet you properly. Hope the rest of your evening was good."
- "I had fun tonight. Let me know if you'd like to do it again sometime."
The second one is a soft door. It's honest and gives them an easy way to say yes.
If you're not interested
Silence is common, but a short, kind message is better. It saves them days of wondering.
- "Thanks for tonight, it was really nice meeting you. I didn't feel a romantic spark, but I wish you the best."
- "I enjoyed talking with you, but I don't think we're a match. Thank you for a nice evening."
Don't add "let's be friends" if you don't mean it. Kind and clear is enough.
How to reply to their text
If they text first, match their energy and add something:
- They say: "I had a great time tonight!" You say: "Me too! I'm still thinking about that dessert. When are you free next week?"
- They say: "Home safe?" You say: "Yes, thank you! Thanks again for tonight, I had fun."
- They say: "Would love to see you again." You say: "Same! How about Thursday? There's a bar near me with great live music."
If they texted and you want a second date, the best reply is a real plan with a day. That ends the guessing for both of you.
Texting after a first date but no plans
This is very common. You text every day, the chat is fun, but nobody suggests a second date. After a week, it starts to feel like a pen pal.
Texting is nice, but it's not the same as dating. If the chat is good, use that energy:
- "I'm enjoying talking to you. Want to grab a drink this weekend?"
- "We should continue this in person. Are you free Saturday?"
If they keep chatting but always avoid plans ("this week is crazy," "soon!"), that's a sign. Busy people who like you still find one evening. If it goes on for weeks, you may be stuck in the talking stage.
How much to text before the second date
There is no perfect number, but a few rules help:
- A bit every day or every other day is fine. You don't need long talks all day.
- Leave things to talk about in person. If you share your whole life story by text, date two has nothing new.
- Keep it balanced. If you always text first or send three messages for each of theirs, slow down a little. Here's more on who texts first and when double texting is fine.
- Ask questions. Open questions keep the chat alive without pressure, and people who ask more follow-up questions are liked more (Huang and colleagues, 2017). Our guide on how to keep a conversation going over text has easy ones.
Red flags after a first date
Most awkward texting is just nerves. But a few things are worth noticing:
- They only text late at night. "wyd" at 1 am, never during the day.
- They talk a lot but never make plans. Lots of words, no dates.
- Big pressure fast. "I think you're the one" after one coffee, or anger if you don't reply quickly.
- Pushing for photos or very personal things you didn't offer.
- Hot and cold. Super warm one day, nothing for four days, then warm again.
- They make you feel bad for not texting enough.
One of these alone is not the end. A few together means it's okay to slow down or step back.
What silence after a first date means
You sent a nice text. No reply, or a very short one. What now?
- A few hours of silence: normal. People work, sleep, see friends.
- A day with no reply: they may be busy or unsure. It's fine to wait.
- Two or three days with nothing: they are probably not interested, or not ready.
- A short, polite reply with no question: often a soft no. "Thanks, you too!" and nothing more usually means they're closing the door gently.
If you want, send one light follow-up after a couple of days: "Hey, no pressure at all, just wanted to see if you'd like a second date." If that gets no answer, let it go. You didn't do anything wrong. You were clear and kind, and that's the best you can do. Being left with no answer at all is ghosting, and it says more about them than about you.
If they reply, read the reply, not the timing. Long messages, questions about you and a "yes" to plans are real signs of interest over text.
Read the pattern, not one text
After a few weeks of texting, one slow reply means little. The pattern means more: who starts most chats, who asks more questions, whether reply times are getting slower.
If you text on WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram or another app, the relationship analyzer can read your exported chat and show who texts first, average reply times and message counts for each of you. The Premium AI report adds an interest level for each person, so you can see if the effort is balanced or if one side is carrying it. Want a quick check first? Try the does he like me quiz.
FAQ
How long should you wait to text after a first date?
Text the same evening or the next morning. In one study, a text the next morning got the best reaction, and waiting two days got the worst. There's no need to wait three days.
Who should text first after a first date?
Anyone. If you had a good time, send the text. Many people hold back because they fear looking too keen, so the other person may be waiting for you.
Is it okay to text right after the first date?
Yes. A short "home safe, thanks for tonight!" is sweet and normal. Just keep it short and don't send several messages in a row.
What if they don't text back after the first date?
Give it a day or two. If there's still nothing, you can send one light follow-up. If that gets no reply, it's best to let it go.
How many days should you wait to text after a first date?
Zero or one. Waiting two days or more often makes the other person think you weren't interested.
Is texting every day before the second date too much?
Not if it feels natural for both of you. Keep it light, keep it balanced, and try to set the second date soon.
Should I text if the date was bad?
A short, kind message is better than silence. "Thanks for tonight, but I don't think we're a match" saves both of you time.
