How to Know If Someone Blocked You on Telegram (5 Signs)
Blocked on Telegram, or did they just hide their last seen or delete their account? The 5 signs, how to check without messaging them, and what each one means.

Short answer: Telegram never tells you that someone blocked you. The clearest sign is "last seen a long time ago" on a person who was active a few days ago, because Telegram always shows that label to blocked users. If their profile photo is also gone and your messages stay on one check for days, a block is very likely. One sign alone is not enough, because privacy settings and a deleted account can look similar.
It's a horrible feeling to open a chat and get the sense that something has changed. Telegram keeps blocks quiet on purpose, to protect the person who blocks. So you can only ever read the signs and say "probably". Here is how to read them honestly.
The 5 signs someone blocked you on Telegram
1. "Last seen a long time ago"
This is the strongest sign, and the only one Telegram confirms itself. Its FAQ says "last seen a long time ago" means more than a month, and that this label is also always shown to blocked users.
So if you talked last week and now their profile says "last seen a long time ago", a block is likely. Real inactivity would first show "within a week", then "within a month", and only later "a long time ago".
But: some people really do stop using Telegram for a month or more. If you haven't talked in a long time, this label can be true.
If you see "last seen recently" instead, you are not blocked. That only means they hide their exact time. Read what last seen recently means on Telegram for every label and its time frame.
2. Their profile photo is gone
When someone blocks you, you usually stop seeing their profile photo. You see a coloured circle with their initials instead.
But: Telegram also has a privacy setting for who can see your profile photo. They may have set it to My Contacts, removed you from their contacts, or just deleted the photo.
3. Your messages stay on one check
On Telegram, one check means the message reached Telegram's servers, and two checks mean they opened the chat and read it. There is no "delivered to phone" step in between.
When you are blocked, your messages never reach the person, so they stay on one check forever.
But: one check is also normal for someone who is busy, taking a break from their phone, or not ready to answer. One check for an hour means nothing. One check for many days, together with sign 1, means more.
4. Calls don't go through
Calls to someone who blocked you don't connect.
But: Telegram has a separate privacy setting for who can call you. Someone can turn off calls from everyone, or from people not in their contacts, without blocking anyone. A failed call is a weak sign on its own.
5. You stop seeing their stories and updates
If they post stories, you stop seeing them.
But: stories can be hidden from single people without a block, and many people simply don't post.
How to check without messaging them
You don't need to send a test message, and it's kinder to both of you if you don't. You can check most signs quietly:
- Open their profile and read the last seen label. "Recently", "within a week" or "within a month" means you are not blocked. "A long time ago" is the warning sign.
- Look at the photo. A photo you can see is a good sign. Initials could mean a block or a privacy setting.
- Look at your last message. If it has two checks, they read it, so you were not blocked when they read it.
- Wait a few days and look again. The label of someone who hid their last seen moves with their activity. The label for a blocked user stays on "a long time ago".
Please don't ask friends to check their profile, and don't make a second account to test. It rarely makes you feel better, and it can feel like pressure or harassment to the other person.
Blocked vs hid last seen vs deleted account
These three are easy to mix up. Here is how they look from your side:
| What you see | Blocked you | Hid last seen | Deleted account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last seen label | Always "a long time ago" | Recently / within a week / within a month | No label |
| Name in chat | Their usual name | Their usual name | Usually "Deleted Account" |
| Profile photo | Usually gone (initials) | Can still show | Gone |
| Your new messages | One check, never two | Two checks when read | Can't send |
| Calls | Don't connect | Can work | Can't call |
| Label changes over days | No | Yes | No |
The name is the quickest tell. A deleted account usually loses its name and shows as "Deleted Account". A block keeps their name, but freezes the last seen on "a long time ago".
Also good to know: Telegram deletes accounts on its own after a long time without use. Its FAQ says that if you don't come online for at least 18 months, your account is deleted (users can change this period in their settings). So an old contact turning into "Deleted Account" is often just that, not a statement about you.
Other reasons your messages don't get through
A few things can look like a block but are not:
- Their phone is off or they are travelling. Telegram will hold your message on one check until they open the chat.
- Your account is limited for spam. Telegram's Spam FAQ says limited accounts can only send messages to people who have their number saved as a contact (and can still reply to anyone who writes first). If many of your messages to new people fail, check this first.
- They charge for messages. Some users set a fee in Telegram Stars for messages from people who are not their contacts. Telegram shows you the cost before you send.
- They muted or archived you. Your messages arrive, but they don't get a notification. You can't see this from your side.
What happens when you block someone on Telegram
So you know what the other side sees:
- The person you block always sees "last seen a long time ago" on your profile.
- Their messages and calls don't reach you.
- They are not told they were blocked.
- Blocking does not delete the chat. The old messages stay on both sides unless someone deletes them.
I think I'm blocked. Now what?
- Don't try to get around it. A block is a clear message about space, even when it hurts. Writing from a new account or a friend's phone usually makes things worse.
- Give it time. People sometimes block in a hot moment and unblock later. If that happens, your new messages will start getting two checks.
- If you see them in real life, you can ask once, calmly, and accept the answer.
- Look at what happened before the block. Did the replies get shorter and slower? Did you start every conversation? Those changes often show up weeks before. Read he stopped texting me and our guide to ghosting for what that pattern usually means.
What your old chat can still tell you
A block ends the conversation, but your chat history is still on your side. If you want to understand what happened, the old messages hold real answers: who texted first most days, who replied faster, and when the balance started to change.
You can export the chat from Telegram Desktop and upload it to the Telegram chat analyzer. It counts who starts the conversations and how long each of you takes to reply, and gives an interest level for each side. It only reads the chat you already have. It can't check if someone blocked you, and no tool honestly can. If you were also talking on WhatsApp, see how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp and use the WhatsApp chat analyzer the same way. For iPhone texts, see blocked on iMessage.
FAQ
Does "last seen a long time ago" always mean I'm blocked on Telegram?
No, but it's the strongest sign. Telegram always shows this label to blocked users. It is also shown when someone has not been online for more than a month.
Does "last seen recently" mean I'm blocked?
No. Blocked users never see "recently". It means they hide their exact last seen from you, or you hide yours from them.
Can someone who blocked me see my messages on Telegram?
No. Messages you send while blocked never reach them, so they stay on one check.
Can I tell if I'm blocked or they deleted their account?
Usually yes. A deleted account shows as "Deleted Account" and you can't send messages. A block keeps their name but shows "last seen a long time ago" and your messages stay on one check.
Is there an app that shows who blocked me on Telegram?
No app can know this for sure, because Telegram doesn't share it. Apps that promise it only check the same signs listed here, and some ask for access to your account. It's safer to avoid them.
If they unblock me, will they get my old messages?
Messages sent while you were blocked are generally not delivered after an unblock. Your new messages should arrive normally and get two checks once read.
Does blocking delete the chat on Telegram?
No. Blocking stops new messages and calls, but the old chat stays unless one of you deletes it.
