Delivered but Not Read: What It Means on Every App
Delivered but not read for hours or days? What it means on iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Telegram, if it can mean a block, and what to do.

Short answer: "delivered but not read" means your message reached their phone, but the app has no sign that they opened the chat. Most of the time they haven't opened it yet, they read it from the notification, or they turned off read receipts, so "Read" will never show. It is usually not a block: on WhatsApp and iMessage, a message from someone who is blocked doesn't get delivered at all. The silence hurts, but the label alone says very little about how they feel.
You sent it. It says "Delivered". An hour later it still says "Delivered". Here is what that really means on each app, and what you can do while you wait.
What "delivered" and "read" actually mean
Every chat app has two separate steps:
- Delivered: the message reached their phone (or the app's servers, on Telegram).
- Read: they opened the chat, and their read receipts are on.
The gap between the two is where all the overthinking happens. "Read" depends on two things you can't control: whether they opened the conversation, and whether they share read receipts at all. A message they read from the lock screen, without opening the chat, stays "delivered".
Delivered but not read, app by app

| App | Delivered looks like | Read looks like | Can they hide "read"? | If they blocked you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iMessage | "Delivered" under your blue message | "Read" with a time | Yes, for everyone or one person | Apple says blocked messages are not delivered, and you are not told |
| Two grey ticks | Two blue ticks | Yes, Read receipts off (not in groups) | Your message stays on one grey tick | |
| Messenger | Filled blue circle with a check | Their small profile photo under the message | Messenger's help page doesn't say | Messenger's help page doesn't say |
| No "Seen" under your message | "Seen" | Yes, per chat or for all chats | See our guide to Restrict and block | |
| Telegram | One check (reached Telegram's cloud) | Two checks | Telegram's FAQ doesn't say | They always show you "last seen a long time ago" |
A few details matter for each one.
iMessage: "Delivered" vs "Read"
Apple's help page explains that when read receipts are on, the sender sees Read under the message. If the person hasn't read it, the sender sees Delivered. People can turn read receipts off for everyone in Settings, or for one person inside a conversation. So for many people, "Delivered" is simply where it stops forever.
Apple also says that you can't turn on read receipts for anyone but yourself. Your setting doesn't change what you see from them. If you never see "Read" from this person, even after they reply, they just don't share read receipts. For the full list of block signs, read how to know if someone blocked you on iMessage.
WhatsApp: two grey ticks, no blue
Two grey ticks mean the message reached their phone or one of their linked devices. Two blue ticks mean they read it. If the ticks stay grey, WhatsApp itself lists the reasons: one of you turned off read receipts, they haven't opened the chat, there is a connection problem, or the date and time on a phone are wrong.
Good news for the anxious part of your brain: WhatsApp says that if someone blocked you, your messages only show one grey tick. So two grey ticks mean it was delivered, which is not what a block looks like. Our guide to WhatsApp ticks explains every tick.
Messenger: filled circle, no profile photo
Messenger's help page lists four icons: a blue circle (sending), a blue circle with a check (sent), a filled blue circle with a check (delivered), and a small version of their profile photo (seen). So "filled circle and no photo" is Messenger's version of delivered but not read.
One extra case: if you two are not connected on Facebook, your message arrives as a message request. Many people rarely open their requests, and Messenger says requests with no answer for more than six months may be deleted automatically.
Instagram: no "Seen"
Instagram shows "Seen" when they view your message, but only if read receipts are on. Instagram lets people turn read receipts off in one chat or in all chats. Also, if someone restricted you, your chat moves to their message requests and they can read your messages without you knowing. More on that in restricted on Instagram.
Telegram: one check
Telegram works a bit differently. Its FAQ says one check means the message reached the Telegram cloud and your friend was notified (if notifications are on). Two checks mean they opened the chat. There is no "delivered to phone" step, because Telegram runs on many devices at once. So on Telegram, one check is the normal "delivered but not read" state.
Delivered but not read for hours
A few hours is normal. People work, sleep, drive, sit in class and switch off their phone for an evening. Some people read a message in the notification, decide to answer "later", and later turns into tomorrow.
A few hours also often means they want to give you a proper answer. A heavy message ("Can we talk about us?") gets left on delivered more often than "lol". People open a hard message when they feel ready for it.
Delivered but not read for days
Days feels different, and it is a bit different. The common reasons:
- They turned off read receipts. Then it will never say "Read". If they reply but "Read" never appears, this is almost certainly it.
- They read it from the notification and haven't opened the chat on purpose.
- They are avoiding the conversation. Not opening the chat is a way to not deal with it yet. This turns into ghosting when it lasts.
- They muted or archived your chat, so it doesn't come to the top.
- It's in their requests (Messenger, Instagram), so they may not have noticed it.
Delivered but not read: am I blocked?
Usually no. On WhatsApp, a block shows as one tick, not two. On iMessage, Apple says messages from a blocked contact are not delivered and the sender is not told. Since "Delivered" means it reached them, it points away from a block. Apple doesn't describe exactly what a blocked sender sees on screen, though, so don't treat one label as proof either way.
The honest truth: no app tells you that you are blocked. You only get clues, and they need to point the same way for days. If you also want to check other apps, here is how to tell if you're blocked on Snapchat.
What it means emotionally
Being left on delivered can feel worse than being left on read. Left on read at least means they saw it. Delivered means you don't even know that.
Try to keep these things in mind:
- It is a moment, not a verdict. One unread message tells you very little about their feelings.
- Patterns tell you more. Do they always take a day, with everyone? Or do they reply to others fast and leave you on delivered? Our guide on reply time meaning helps you tell what is normal for them.
- Hiding "read" is common. Many people turn read receipts off because they feel pressure to answer fast, not because of you.
What to do while you wait
- Don't send three more messages. If you need to add something, one short follow-up after a day is fine.
- Don't test them. Asking a friend to check, making fake accounts, watching if they view your WhatsApp status or using "last seen tracker" apps will only feed the anxiety. Some of these apps also ask for your login, which is risky.
- Make answering easy. "No rush, whenever you have time" takes pressure off both of you.
- Set your own limit. Decide how long you will wait before you stop checking. Then put the phone down.
- If it keeps happening, talk about it once, calmly, by voice if you can.
Look at the whole chat, not one message
A single delivered message is a snapshot. Your chat history is the full film: who starts conversations, who takes longer to reply, and whether that changed over time. When you can see that the delay is normal for them, the anxiety drops a lot. When it isn't normal, at least you know.
The Cringe reads an exported chat and counts this for you: who texts first, average reply time for each person, and how it changed by month. It works with WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, Telegram and more. Try the text message analyzer or, for WhatsApp, the WhatsApp chat analyzer.
FAQ
What does delivered but not read mean?
The message reached their phone, but they haven't opened the chat, or they opened it with read receipts off. It doesn't tell you that they ignored you on purpose.
Does delivered but not read mean I'm blocked?
Usually not. On WhatsApp, a block shows only one grey tick, not two. On iMessage, Apple says messages from a blocked contact are not delivered.
Why does my iMessage say delivered but they replied?
They turned off read receipts, for everyone or just for your chat. Then you will never see "Read", even after they reply.
Can someone read my message without it saying read?
Yes. They can read it in the notification without opening the chat, or turn off read receipts. On Instagram, someone who restricted you can also read your messages without you knowing.
How long is normal to stay on delivered?
A few hours is very normal. Look at how long this person usually takes. If it is much longer than their normal and it keeps happening, that pattern means more than one message.
Should I text again if it says delivered?
One gentle follow-up after a day or two is fine. Several messages in a row usually add pressure and make a reply less likely.
