WhatsApp Calling vs Ringing: What It Means (and If You're Blocked)

Calling vs Ringing on WhatsApp: what each word means, why a call stays on Calling, if it means you are blocked, and what 'on another call' tells you.

By The Cringe teamSarah HayozReviewed by Sarah Hayoz5 min read

Short answer: on a WhatsApp call, "Calling" means WhatsApp is trying to reach the other phone but has not reached it yet. "Ringing" means the call reached their phone and it is ringing now. A call that stays on "Calling" usually means their phone is offline: no internet, airplane mode, or switched off. If it stays on "Calling" every time, for days, and other signs line up, they may have blocked you.

It is a small word under a name, but it can make your heart drop. Here is what each one tells you, and what it does not.

Calling vs Ringing at a glance

What you see What it means What it does not prove
Calling Your call has not reached their phone yet That they blocked you
Ringing Their phone got the call and is ringing That they saw it was you
On another call They are already in a WhatsApp call Who they are talking to
Unavailable or the call ends by itself Nobody answered, or the call could not connect That they declined you on purpose
Connected with a timer They picked up Nothing more to read

What "Calling" means on WhatsApp

"Calling" shows while WhatsApp tries to reach the other person's phone. Their phone needs a working internet connection for the call to arrive. Common reasons a call stays on "Calling":

  • Their mobile data and Wi-Fi are off, or the signal is very weak.
  • Their phone is in airplane mode or switched off.
  • Their battery saver stops WhatsApp from running in the background (common on some Android phones).
  • Your own connection is bad, so the call never really leaves your phone.
  • They blocked you. A call from a blocked number does not reach them, so it never starts to ring.

Most of the time it is the first three. People sleep, travel, sit in class with data off, or run out of battery.

What "Ringing" means

"Ringing" means the call reached their device and it is ringing there right now. So their phone is on and connected. It does not mean they looked at the screen. The phone may be in a bag, on silent, or in another room.

If it rings and they don't pick up, try not to read too much into one missed call. Many people simply prefer text, or can't talk where they are. A short message like "call me when you can" often works better than calling again and again.

"Calling" but not "Ringing": am I blocked?

A call that only says "Calling" is a possible sign of a block, but on its own it is weak. WhatsApp itself lists calls that don't go through as one of several signs, and it says these signs can have other causes (WhatsApp Help Center, being blocked).

Look at the other signs together:

  1. Your messages stay on one grey tick for days. See one tick meaning.
  2. You can't see their last seen or online, even though you could before. See last seen meaning.
  3. Their profile photo is gone or never changes for you.
  4. Every call stays on "Calling" over several days, at different times.

If all four happen at once, a block is likely. If only the call is odd, it is much more likely their phone is offline. Our full guide on how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp goes through each sign, and how it differs from someone who deleted your number.

What "on another call" means

You may see that the person is on another call. It means they are already in a WhatsApp voice or video call when you try. It does not show who they are talking to. It might be a parent, a work call or a group call with friends.

If it bothers you that they were on a call late at night, that feeling is worth noticing. But one call proves nothing. Patterns over weeks matter more than one evening, the same as with being online but not replying.

Why a WhatsApp call says "Unavailable"

A call can end on its own with a message like "Unavailable" or "Couldn't connect". This usually means nobody answered in time, or the connection dropped on one side. Updating WhatsApp, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and checking that WhatsApp is allowed to use data in the background fix most cases on your side.

What to do if they never pick up

  • Text first. "Hey, tried to call. Free later?" puts less pressure on them than three missed calls.
  • Check your own connection. Call someone else to test it.
  • Give it time. Try again later in the day, not ten minutes later.
  • Look at the bigger picture. Do they reply to your texts? Do they start chats? One unanswered call is a moment. Months of you doing all the effort is a pattern.

When it is about more than one call

If you keep checking whether calls ring, the real question is usually "do they still care?" That is something the chat itself can show. Who starts conversations, how fast each of you replies, and whether their effort is going down over time are all in your messages.

The Cringe's WhatsApp chat analyzer turns an exported chat into those numbers: who texts first, average reply time for each person and how the chat changed month by month. For every WhatsApp sign in one place, read our WhatsApp signs guide.

FAQ

Does a WhatsApp call ring if you are blocked?

No. When someone blocks you, your call does not reach their phone, so it does not ring for them. On your side it usually stays on "Calling" and then ends.

Why does my WhatsApp call say "Calling" and not "Ringing"?

Their phone has not received the call yet. Most often their internet is off, the phone is off, or the signal is weak. A block is one possible reason, but it is not the most common one.

Can someone see I called if it only said "Calling"?

Often yes, later. When their phone comes back online, WhatsApp usually shows them a missed call. If they blocked you, they won't get it.

Does "Ringing" mean they ignored my call?

No. It only means their phone was ringing. They may not have seen or heard it.

Can I tell who someone is on a call with?

No. WhatsApp only shows that they are on another call, never with whom. Read who is someone chatting with on WhatsApp for what you can and can't know.
