How to Know If Someone Blocked You on Snapchat
Blocked on Snapchat, unadded or did they delete their account? How to check with search, chats, Stories and Snap Score, without sending a message.

Short answer: Snapchat never tells you that someone blocked you. The strongest sign is that you can't find or open their profile anymore, your chat with them is gone, and you no longer see their Stories, while a friend can still find them. If they only unadded you, you can usually still find their profile, but your Snaps may show "pending". If they deleted their account, nobody can find or add them. No single sign is 100% sure, so look at a few together.
Their Snaps stopped. Their name is gone from your Chat screen. Your mind goes straight to "they blocked me". Here is how to tell what really happened, without sending them a single message.
What Snapchat does when someone blocks you
Snapchat's help page on blocking is quite clear about what changes. When someone blocks you:
- You can't send them Snaps or Chats.
- You no longer see their Stories or Charms.
- Their Snap Map location is hidden from you, even if they shared it before.
- On their side, your name disappears from their Friends Feed, and your one-on-one chat is no longer visible.
- Saved messages may be removed when you are no longer friends, and that includes blocking.
Snapchat also says the person you block won't get a notification, but "they might realize" it if they can no longer view the profile or make contact. So you only get clues. That is on purpose.
Blocked vs unadded vs deleted
These three look similar at first. This table shows the differences.
| What you check | Blocked | Unadded (removed as friend) | Deleted account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search for their username | Profile usually can't be found or opened | You can still find them | Can't be found (may show for a while) |
| Add them as a friend | Not possible | Possible, they can accept or not | Not possible |
| Your old chat | May disappear, saved messages may go | Can stay, saved messages may be removed | Snapchat doesn't say |
| Their private Stories | Gone | Gone | Gone |
| Their public content (Spotlight, Public Stories) | Can still be visible | Visible | Gone |
| Your new Snaps or Chats | Can't reach them | May show "pending" | Can't reach them |
| Their Snap Score | Can't see it | May disappear (it shows on friend profiles) | Gone |
| What a friend sees | They can still find them | They can still find them | Nobody can find them |
Two notes from Snapchat's own help pages make this easier:
- Deleted accounts can linger. Snapchat says a deleted account "may still show up" for a while, until you log out and log back in. Also, when someone deletes their account, it is first deactivated for 30 days, and they can come back by logging in. After 30 more days, it is deleted for good.
- Blocking doesn't hide public content. Snapchat says people you block can still see what you post publicly, like Public Stories or Spotlight. So if you can still see someone's Spotlight, that alone does not prove they didn't block you.
How to check without sending a message
You don't need a test Snap. These checks are quieter and kinder to both of you.
1. Search for their username
Tap the search icon and type their exact username, not only their display name. Display names change, usernames don't.
- You find them and can open their profile: you are not blocked. If there is an "Add" button where it used to say friends, they may have unadded you.
- You can't find them at all: they blocked you, or their account is deactivated or deleted. Go to step 4.
2. Look at your Chat screen
If your conversation with them disappeared and you didn't clear it yourself, note it as a clue. Also remember that Snapchat deletes unsaved messages on a timer by default, so an empty chat is normal. Our guide on how to see old Snapchat messages explains how that timer works.
3. Check their Story and Snap Score
If they post Stories every day and you suddenly see none, that fits a block or an unadd. Snapchat shows a friend's Snap Score on their Friendship Profile. If their profile opens but the score is gone, you are probably no longer friends. If the profile doesn't open at all, that points more to a block or a deleted account.
4. Ask a friend to search for them
This is the clearest test between blocked and deleted. If a mutual friend can find their username and you can't, the account exists, so a block is likely. If nobody can find it, the account was probably deactivated or deleted.
Keep it to one simple check. Asking several people to watch someone's profile turns into stalking, and it usually makes you feel worse, not better.
What "pending" means on Snapchat
Snapchat's help page on chat icons says a grey "pending" icon may appear, depending on privacy settings, when someone has not accepted your friend request. It can also mean a Snap or Chat is pending and may have expired.
So "pending" usually means one of these:
- They removed you as a friend, and their settings only allow messages from friends.
- They never accepted your friend request.
- It's an old Snap that expired before it was opened.
Snapchat also explains that if someone's "Contact Me" setting is set to friends only, they won't see your message until they accept your friend request. Pending is not a block, but it does mean the friendship is not two-way right now.
Why people block on Snapchat
A block feels personal, and sometimes it is. But it is not always about hate or anger. People block on Snapchat to:
- Stop themselves from checking your Stories after a breakup.
- Take a clean break when talking feels too painful.
- Hide their Snap Map location.
- End a talking stage without a hard conversation.
If someone you were close to disappeared like this, it may feel like ghosting. The pain is real, and so is the message: right now they don't want contact. Trying to reach them through new accounts or friends usually makes things worse.
What not to do
- Don't use "who blocked me" apps. They can't see Snapchat's data. Some ask for your Snapchat password, and that is how accounts get stolen.
- Don't make a second account to look at their profile.
- Don't send messages through mutual friends if they clearly chose distance.
If someone blocked you on more than one app, the signs are different everywhere. Here is how to tell on WhatsApp, what delivered but not read means on other apps, and what it means when an ex still views your WhatsApp status.

What your old Snapchat chat can tell you
Wondering what went wrong is normal. Often the answer is already in your chat history: who started most conversations, who took longer to reply, and when things started to slow down.
If you saved messages with this person, you can download your chat history from Snapchat's My Data page and upload the zip to the Snapchat chat analyzer. It shows who texts first, who replies faster and how the balance changed over time. It only counts saved messages, so the picture is partial, but it is often clearer than memory. FAQ
How do I know if someone blocked me on Snapchat?
You can't find or open their profile in search, your chat with them is gone, and you no longer see their Stories, but a friend can still find them. Any one sign alone can have another cause.
How can I tell if someone blocked me or deleted their Snapchat?
Ask a friend to search for their username. If the friend can find them and you can't, a block is likely. If nobody can find them, the account was probably deactivated or deleted.
What does "pending" mean on Snapchat?
Snapchat says a grey pending icon may appear when someone hasn't accepted your friend request. It often means they removed you as a friend or never added you back. It can also mean a Snap expired.
Does Snapchat notify you when someone blocks you?
No. Snapchat says the person who is blocked doesn't get a notification. You can only notice the changes, like a profile you can't open.
If someone unadds me on Snapchat, can they still see my Story?
They can't see Stories you share with friends only. Snapchat says removed friends can still see anything you set to public.
Can I still see someone's Snap Score if they blocked me?
Not usually. A Snap Score shows on a friend's profile. If you can't open their profile, you can't see the score.
Do messages come back if they unblock me?
Not always. Snapchat says you may not see all your previous chat history after an unblock, and saved messages may be removed when you are no longer friends.
