WhatsApp Status Seen: Who Viewed It and How to Hide It
Who can see your WhatsApp status, why the seen list is empty, unknown or blocked numbers in it, how to view a status secretly, and what a crush's views mean.

Short answer: your WhatsApp status "seen" list shows the contacts who viewed your status, and when. It only works if both of you have read receipts on. If you turn off read receipts, others usually can't see that you viewed their status, but you also lose your own viewer list. By default, your status is shared with all your contacts, and you can limit that with My contacts except... or Only share with... in your status privacy settings.
Status views are small, but they can feel huge. They watched your status in the first minute. They never text. What does that mean? First, the facts. Then the feelings.
How the WhatsApp status seen list works
A status (text, photo, video or GIF) disappears after 24 hours. While it is live, you can open My status and tap the eye icon to see who viewed it and when. People who liked it have a green heart.
The list has one big rule. WhatsApp's help page says it plainly: you can't see who viewed your status if either of you turned off read receipts. So the list is not "everyone who saw it". It is "everyone who saw it and shares read receipts".
Who can see my WhatsApp status?
By default, your status is shared with all your contacts. To change it, open Status privacy in WhatsApp and pick one:
| Setting | Who sees your status |
|---|---|
| My contacts | All your saved contacts (the default) |
| My contacts except... | All contacts, minus the people you pick |
| Only share with... | Only the people you pick |
A few rules that surprise people:
- Saved numbers matter. The audience is built from your contacts, and WhatsApp's troubleshooting page tells people to save each other's numbers when a status doesn't show up.
- Changes are not retroactive. A new setting doesn't change statuses you already posted.
- Mentions override your audience. If you mention someone in a status, they can see it even if they are not in your audience. They can also reshare it, but WhatsApp says reshares don't show your name, profile info or phone number.
- Group statuses are visible to everyone in that group, whatever your status privacy says.
- People you blocked can't see it. WhatsApp says your status updates are not visible to users you've blocked.
The other person doesn't get a message when you exclude them. They just stop seeing your updates.
WhatsApp status seen by an unknown number
This one is scary, but the official answer is simple. WhatsApp says that if an unknown number viewed your status, a contact may have changed their number. Your phone still has their old number, so WhatsApp shows the new one without a name.
Other possibilities:
- You deleted that contact. WhatsApp says a deleted contact who already viewed your status stays on the viewer list until the status expires.
- Someone you mentioned in the status saw it.
- You posted to a group, so group members you haven't saved could see it.
If you don't want strangers to see your updates, use Only share with... and pick people one by one.
WhatsApp status seen by a blocked number
WhatsApp says blocked users can't see your status updates. So if a number you blocked appears in your seen list, check the time next to their name. WhatsApp shows when each person viewed your status. If that time is before you blocked them, that is when they saw it.
If you were the one blocked, you won't see their statuses at all. WhatsApp lists not seeing someone's statuses as one of the signs that they may have blocked you. Our guide on how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp explains the other signs, and here is how to tell if you're blocked on Snapchat.
Status seen list not showing
If your list is empty or missing someone, the usual reasons are:
- Your read receipts are off. Then you see an icon instead of the list. Turn them on in Settings, Privacy, Read receipts.
- Their read receipts are off. They may have watched it, but you will never see their name.
- Nobody has viewed it yet. WhatsApp suggests waiting a while and checking again.
- They are not in your audience, or they don't have your number saved.
- Connection problems on either side.
So an empty list doesn't prove nobody cares. Some of your closest friends may have read receipts off.
How to view a WhatsApp status without them knowing
The only official way is to turn off read receipts before you watch it. WhatsApp's help page says that with read receipts off, others "may also not be able to see when you view their status". Note the word "may": WhatsApp doesn't promise it, so don't bet a friendship on it.
The cost: you lose blue ticks in one-to-one chats, and you can't see who views your own status either. Read receipts in group chats can't be turned off at all.
Other tricks you will find online:
- Status "viewer" or "saver" apps and modded WhatsApp (GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp and others). WhatsApp calls these unofficial apps. It says they can carry malware, your messages may not stay private, and your account can be banned. Not worth it for one status.
- Hiding a status (mute) doesn't help. It only moves their status to a Hidden section for you. It doesn't change what they see.
Does turning off read receipts hide status views?
Mostly yes, both ways. Turn them off, and others usually can't see that you viewed their status. But you also can't see who viewed yours. It is the same deal as blue ticks: read receipts are a two-way setting.
My crush always watches my status but doesn't text
This is the question behind most "status seen" searches. They are always among the first viewers. They never send a message. What does it mean?
Honestly, it can mean a few different things:
- They are curious about you. Watching is easy and safe. Texting is a risk. Some people watch for weeks before they find the courage to say something.
- They watch everyone's status. Many people tap through all statuses on autopilot. Being first can just mean they opened WhatsApp at the right moment.
- They want to stay in your world without commitment. This is common after a breakup or in a situationship. Watching keeps the door open, without the effort of a conversation.
- They are checking on you, in a "I still care, but I won't say it" way.
What it doesn't mean: that they are definitely in love with you, or definitely playing games. Views are a weak signal. Messages, questions and plans are strong ones.
If you want to know more, there are two kind and simple moves. You can reply to one of their statuses with something light. Or you can post something that invites a reply, like a question, and see if they answer. If they always watch but never reply, even when you open the door, that is your answer, and it may be a case of mixed signals.
What views can't tell you, and your chat can
Status views tell you someone is watching. They don't tell you who makes the effort. That story is in your chat: who texts first, who replies faster and who asks the questions.
The Cringe's WhatsApp chat analyzer reads an exported chat and shows those numbers for both of you. If a message from them is stuck on two grey ticks, here is what delivered but not read means. For every tick, status and sign in one place, see the WhatsApp signs guide.
FAQ
Can someone see that I viewed their WhatsApp status?
Yes, if you both have read receipts on. Your name and the time you viewed it appear in their viewer list. If either of you has read receipts off, they usually can't see it.
Why can't I see who viewed my WhatsApp status?
Either your read receipts are off, the viewers have theirs off, or nobody has viewed it yet. Turn on read receipts in Settings, Privacy.
Why did an unknown number view my WhatsApp status?
WhatsApp says a contact may have changed their number. It can also be someone you deleted from your contacts, or someone you mentioned in the status.
Can a blocked contact see my WhatsApp status?
No. WhatsApp says your status updates are not visible to people you've blocked. If they appear in your list, they likely viewed it before you blocked them.
Does WhatsApp tell someone if I exclude them from my status?
No. They are not notified. They simply stop seeing your new status updates.
Can I see who screenshotted my WhatsApp status?
WhatsApp's help pages only describe who viewed and who liked your status. They don't mention any screenshot alert for status.
Is there an app to see WhatsApp status secretly?
There are apps that promise it, but WhatsApp warns that unofficial apps can steal data and get your account banned. Turning off read receipts is the only official way.
